Adolph Reed on the Politics of Cultural Identity

Since the late 1960s, cultural identity has tended to dominate Left politics in the United States. I’ll be writing more about the state of the U.S. Left in future posts. For now, I can’t recommend anything more highly than a recent essay by political scientist Adolph Reed, entitled Django Unchained or The Help: How “Cultural Politics” Is Worse Than No Politics at All, and Why.” It’s not a quick read, but worth the time if you’re interested in considering the politics of cultural identity in the context of contemporary capitalism.
